The Irish wake forms a very important part of Irish culture, where people travelled many miles to pay their respects on the death of a family member. Hospitality always dictated that a glass of whiskey be shared, and all would utter the immortal words "Ní bheidh a leithead arís ann" - "their likes will never be seen again."
In Lily Poole's Parlour, a beautifully refurbished 1870s house that now forms part of The Reg, meet Dermot Power, a local historian who will bring you on a journey of discovery into the unique ways we celebrate life and honour the legacy of those who have passed in Ireland.
You will hear what it was like to experience a traditional family wake, why people were encouraged to dance and sing as loudly as possible, the significance of 'The Parting Glass', and much more.
During this immersive 35-minute video experience, you will hear from Dermot himself, as well as our Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney, Ronnie Drew and The Dubliners, among others. We know you have travelled many miles to be with us, so we have not one but three carefully selected Irish whiskeys for you to enjoy throughout the video. The Irish are famous around the world for the unique ways that we celebrate the lives of those who have passed, and this light-hearted video experience explains exactly why.
